As part of its steadfast commitment to supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promoting environmental awareness and climate action, Al-Mustaqbal University organized a celebration marking the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, observed annually on 17 June, with broad participation from university staff and students.
The event highlighted a range of environmental initiatives and activities implemented by the university’s students during the previous spring season, which contributed to combating desertification and addressing water scarcity and drought challenges, in line with the university’s vision of advancing environmental sustainability and fostering a culture of social responsibility.
The celebration featured presentations on extensive tree-planting campaigns conducted across the university campus and its surroundings to expand green spaces, mitigate the effects of desertification, and improve the local environment. These initiatives witnessed active participation from academic staff, administrative personnel, and students, who also displayed banners and flags supporting environmental protection and the preservation of natural resources.
The event also showcased the university’s hydroponic agriculture projects, recognized as innovative agricultural practices that significantly reduce water consumption and enhance water-use efficiency, thereby contributing to drought mitigation efforts and supporting sustainable water and food security.
Through this occasion, Al-Mustaqbal University reaffirmed its commitment to employing scientific research and innovation in addressing environmental and developmental challenges, further strengthening its role as a leading academic institution dedicated to providing practical and sustainable solutions to contemporary environmental issues.
These efforts directly contribute to the achievement of SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 13: Climate Action, and SDG 15: Life on Land, while also supporting partnerships and initiatives aimed at protecting ecosystems and conserving natural resources for future generations.
