Under the patronage of the President of Al-Mustaqbal University, Prof. Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, and as part of the activities of the 4th International Sustainability Week 2026, the College of Science at Al-Mustaqbal University organized a specialized scientific forum on water security in Iraq, under the direct supervision of the Dean of the College of Science, Asst. Prof. Dr. Furat Hamza Al-Sultani, with the participation of a distinguished group of academics, experts, and representatives of governmental institutions.
The forum aimed to enhance awareness of current water challenges and promote sustainable management approaches. It addressed the status of water resources in Iraq and the challenges facing this vital sector amid climate change and increasing water demand, with a focus on strategic solutions to achieve water security and ensure the sustainability of resources for future generations.
The sessions also discussed groundwater resources and the necessity of regulating their use in accordance with legal frameworks, in order to reduce violations and protect water resources from overexploitation, thereby supporting sustainable water governance.
The forum witnessed active participation from the Ministry of Water Resources, where Dr. Mitham Ali Al-Ghanimi, Director General of the General Commission for Groundwater, Dr. Amir Jawad Kazem, Head of the Planning Department, and Dr. Mitham Shalan Al-Wtaifi, Director of Water Resources in Babylon, presented scientific contributions focusing on strategic planning and water management in Babylon Governorate. Additionally, Dr. Kareem Ghaffal Al-Mutawki, representing Al-Imam Al-Sadiq University / Najaf Branch, delivered a research-oriented presentation highlighting the academic dimension and the role of educational institutions in supporting water studies.
The session was chaired and moderated by Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohammed Latif Hussein, who structured the discussion themes and facilitated academic dialogue between experts and researchers from both academic and governmental sectors.
This scientific activity aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, by promoting sustainable water resource management
SDG 13: Climate Action, by addressing the impacts of climate change on water resources
SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through collaboration between academic and governmental institutions
Through this forum, Al-Mustaqbal University reaffirms its leading role in addressing critical national issues, supporting scientific research, and strengthening institutional partnerships in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals in Iraq.
