Climate Change Impacts on Public Health and the Role of Women in Adaptation

Under the patronage of the President of Al-Mustaqbal University, Prof. Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, and as part of the university’s efforts to enhance awareness of environmental and health issues, the Sustainable Development Division organized an online workshop in cooperation with the Together Association for Human and Environmental Protection and the College of Nursing at Al-Mustaqbal University on Thursday, March 26, 2026, with wide participation from universities, government institutions, and civil society organizations across various Iraqi governorates.
The workshop featured lectures delivered by Dr. Mona Abdulwahab Khalil from the College of Nursing, Eng. Khalid Kadhim Al-Salihi, Head of the Sustainable Development Division at Al-Mustaqbal University, and expert Eng. Saadia Faleh Hassoun, Head of the Together Association for Human and Environmental Protection.
The workshop focused on several key themes, including the direct health impacts of climate change on public health, such as heatwaves, dust storms, and respiratory diseases, as well as the effects of climate change on food security and public nutrition, the spread of climate-related diseases, environmental displacement and its impact on physical and mental health, in addition to the role of women in resilience and adaptation to climate change.
The workshop concluded with a set of key recommendations, including enhancing public awareness of climate-related health risks, improving the readiness of healthcare institutions to address climate-related diseases, strengthening water and sanitation management and protecting vulnerable groups, empowering women in climate adaptation and decision-making, and supporting mental health, education, and scientific research.
This initiative aligns with the university’s mission and objectives in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 5: Gender Equality, SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, and SDG 13: Climate Action.
