Many people start their mornings, especially during work hours, by consuming stimulants and energy drinks. Regardless of the type, the key factor is that they contain caffeine, which serves as a daily stimulant to kickstart the day. People have different preferences—some opt for tea, others for black coffee, energy drinks, or brewed coffee.

The higher the caffeine content in a drink, the stronger the desire to consume it, as individuals believe it will have a more potent effect. This brings us to the topic of caffeine, which is a colorless crystalline and alkaline substance. Caffeine primarily acts on the central nervous system, playing a fundamental role in enhancing concentration, alertness, and transitioning from a state of unconsciousness to awareness.

Chemically, caffeine belongs to the methylxanthine class and is the most widely consumed psychoactive substance worldwide. It increases cyclic AMP levels by non-selectively inhibiting phosphodiesterase and enhances calcium release from intracellular stores. Within an hour of caffeine consumption, its levels peak in the bloodstream. The effects can last for 4 to 6 hours, providing the body with energy, speed, and daily activity for exercise, work, and prolonged study hours. It stimulates the nervous system and brain cells and has been linked to a reduced risk of several diseases, such as diabetes, Alzheimer's, and improved liver health.

A 2016 study published in Frontiers in Psychology found that coffee positively affects students' memory when consumed early in the morning. The impact was particularly noticeable during morning exams. Additionally, a 2017 study published in The Journal of Headache and Pain indicated that combining caffeine with other headache-relief medications, such as paracetamol, was safe and effective in managing migraine pain.

Despite its benefits, excessive caffeine consumption can have adverse effects. Studies suggest that consuming 200 mg in one sitting (approximately 2.5 cups of coffee) or up to 400 mg per day is not considered dangerous. However, excessive intake can lead to insomnia, making it difficult to sleep and affecting productivity the following day. Other potential side effects include headaches due to sleep deprivation, increased blood pressure, and irregular heartbeats. Recent findings indicate that individuals with heart conditions may experience palpitations after consuming high amounts of caffeine.

Regardless of caffeine's benefits and drawbacks, it remains a foreign substance that influences the body's mechanisms. However, a healthy lifestyle is the true key to maintaining energy, focus, and regulated sleep. Those who sleep early wake up feeling refreshed and active. Similarly, morning jogging, staying hydrated with water and lemon, eating a nutritious breakfast, exposure to sunlight, and cold showers contribute to overall well-being. Certain foods can naturally enhance focus and energy, such as apples, green tea, carrot and orange juice, lemon-honey tea, dates, and oats.

Ultimately, the human body is designed with a divine mechanism of strength and immunity. Proper sleep, balanced nutrition, exercise, and walking contribute to overall health. The body is not so weak that it needs to rely solely on chemicals like caffeine. Morning headaches, for instance, signal an underlying imbalance—perhaps due to late-night sleep, high salt intake, or other issues. Suppressing headaches with caffeine or medication is not a solution; addressing the root cause of the problem is essential.

Caffeinated drinks like coffee and tea should be consumed to enhance focus and energy, not excessively to overburden the brain and body. The body requires multiple factors to function at its best.
