As part of its commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Al-Mustaqbal University, under the patronage of its President, Prof. Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, organized a virtual workshop on the occasion of World Water Day 2026, held on Sunday, March 22, 2026, titled: "From Awareness to Empowerment: The Role of Women in Achieving Sustainable Water Resources Management."
This initiative aligns with the United Nations’ 2026 theme, which focuses on advancing gender equality in water resource management, supporting the achievement of SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), as well as SDG 5 (Gender Equality) through community empowerment and the active role of women in managing natural resources.
In his opening remarks, the University President emphasized the importance of leveraging international observances to promote sound environmental practices and raise public awareness about water scarcity and its associated challenges. He also highlighted the role of academic institutions in addressing water-related issues by fostering a culture of responsible water use and directing scientific research and graduation projects toward sustainable solutions.
For his part, the Director of Scientific and Academic Supervision, Prof. Dr. Mudhafar Sadiq Al-Zuhairi, stressed that water is a fundamental pillar for achieving environmental, social, and food security. He pointed to the growing challenges posed by climate change and population growth, emphasizing the need to intensify scientific research efforts to ensure efficient and sustainable water resource management, while highlighting the vital role of women in advancing sustainability pathways.
The workshop also showcased several sustainable practices adopted by the university, including the use of smart sensors in water systems, modern irrigation technologies, and wastewater recycling projects. These efforts reflect the university’s commitment to implementing sustainability concepts on campus and contribute to achieving SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
The event featured specialized scientific presentations addressing key topics such as community awareness on water conservation, the role of women in water management, and successful local and international initiatives in sustainable water practices.
This workshop is part of a series of activities organized by Al-Mustaqbal University to support the sustainability agenda and strengthen the integration between education, scientific research, and community service, contributing to sustainable development and building a more environmentally conscious society.
