On the morning of Tuesday, June 3, 2025, AL- MUSTAQBAL University celebrated World Bicycle Day with a distinguished event held under the direct patronage of University President, Professor Dr. Hassan Shakir Majid, and with broad participation from both the academic and administrative staff, as well as the university’s students.
This event, which coincides with the occasion recognized by the United Nations since 2018, is part of the university’s continuous efforts to promote the concepts of green and sustainable transportation, and to encourage the use of bicycles as an environmentally friendly, healthy, and economical means of transport that contributes to reducing pollution and decreasing reliance on conventional polluting vehicles.
The university grounds witnessed the organization of an exciting sports event, during which participants rode their bicycles across the campus using specially prepared safe routes, in an interactive atmosphere that combined fun with environmental awareness.
In a statement on the sidelines of the event, Dr. Muthaffar Sadiq Al-Zuhairi, Director of Scientific and Academic Supervision at the university, stated:
“Promoting a culture of bicycle use has become an environmental and health necessity, given its direct positive impact on individuals and communities. It also plays a significant role in reducing carbon emissions responsible for global warming and climate change — two of the most critical global challenges of our time.”
It is worth noting that AL- MUSTAQBAL University is one of the first educational institutions in Iraq to actively implement the concept of sustainable transportation within its campus, by encouraging the use of bicycles, scooters, and electric vehicles, as part of its pioneering vision under the slogan:
“Towards a Sustainable University.”
