Al-Mustaqbal University in Babylon continues to reinforce its position as one of Iraq’s leading universities in the field of environmental sustainability through the development and expansion of plant propagation nurseries across the university campus, as part of its institutional vision aimed at supporting the Sustainable Development Goals and promoting environmental awareness within the university community.
Driven by its commitment to increasing green spaces and creating a sustainable campus environment, the technical staff of the Diwan Affairs Department – Agricultural Division – has launched a comprehensive development campaign for the University’s central nurseries, which include thousands of diverse plant species. This initiative reflects the University’s dedication to providing an integrated educational and healthy environment that combines academic excellence with environmental and aesthetic values.
Al-Mustaqbal University places significant emphasis on preserving plant diversity, as the nurseries work on propagating rare plants and localizing certain plant species that have declined within the Iraqi environment. In addition, the nurseries contribute to supplying the campus with trees, shrubs, and plants that improve air quality, reduce temperatures, and enhance environmental balance throughout the University.
The nurseries also serve as a vibrant space that adds a distinctive aesthetic and cultural character to the University’s facilities through the cultivation of seasonal and perennial flowers and the careful landscaping of green areas in a way that reflects the environmental and visual identity of Al-Mustaqbal University.
This project aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 13 (Climate Action) through supporting environmental efforts and increasing vegetation cover, Goal 15 (Life on Land) by preserving plant diversity, Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through creating a healthy and sustainable university environment, and Goal 4 (Quality Education) by utilizing these green spaces to promote environmental awareness and sustainability culture among students.
These efforts have contributed to strengthening Al-Mustaqbal University’s presence in international sustainability rankings, including the UI GreenMetric ranking, which evaluates universities’ performance in environmental sustainability and green infrastructure.
Al-Mustaqbal University believes that sustainability is not merely a complementary activity, but an essential part of its institutional identity and academic mission. Therefore, the University continues implementing environmental and developmental projects that serve the community and reinforce its role in building a more sustainable future for coming generations.
